CACAO BEANS

Impacting bean-to-bar chocolate makers and smallholder farmers lives through fine flavor cacao.

About us

WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF CHANGE AND THE MAGIC OF TRANSFORMATION

We believe in the power of change, thanks to communities with a long history of conflict that decided to move forward to a collaborative alternative for peace, legality, inclusion, and sustainability around cacao.
We believe and celebrate the magic of the cacao transformation, which delights consumers as high-end chocolate products
The transformation from an extractive to a sustainable economy, from intermediaries keeping the profits to farmers with an entrepreneurship mindset and ownership, from the individual production of a commodity to centralized operations, where wet cacao is processed to ensure high-quality, and unique flavor profiles, from doing what has always done to an innovative long-term business model.
We believe we are connected by this transformation, that the daily effort of our farmers has an effect on the chocolate business, and that just like the flapping of a buterfly's wings it has an positive effect on the other side of the globe.

History

The name “Okanta” derives from both, the word “Okonta” meaning “cacao plant” in Muzo language, and, the Spanish word “encantar” meaning “enchanting”.

“Okanta” is a reminder of:

    • The local development boost we bring in the areas in which we operate, working in a direct and inclusive relationship with smallholder cacao farmers.
    • The magic that appears in the making of quality cacao beans seduces and delights the palate of chocolate consumers.
  •

In brief, Okanta translates the enthusiasm and joy that this project conveys.

Our model

The integrated business model for quality, transparency, and equity.

We collect wet cacao at farms, centralize the postharvest process, and market outstanding quality cacao beans with a unique flavor profile while creating a successful development within Colombian
cacao growing communities.

In this way, and through a joint venture between local associations and private entrepreneurs, we ensure smallholder farmers are at the heart of our value proposition, at the center of our activities, and not only included in our operations but also our strategy as business partners. Only then it’s a reciprocal partnership. We treat their farm as if they were ours. They act as a direct shareholder of the company.

WE WORK WITH PASSION FOR CACAO, NATURE, AND COMMUNITIES TOWARDS A BETTER KIND OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT

How we do it?

Working with smallholder farmers'; associations to ensure they are being paid a better price and included as shareholders.

Supporting communities

Providing continuous technical assistance and training to them to become competitive cacao farmers, promoting sustainable use of land with preservation of soils and biodiversity and no deforestation. Renovating their old orchards and implementing agroforestry practices.

Transforming complex territories

Creating economic, legal, and sustainable alternatives in territories marked by cocoa and extractive activities. Supporting the bankarization of farmers and building long-lasting commercial partnerships around the world.

Collecting wet cacao at farmgate

For farmers’ time, labor, and money saving. It also let us control all the postharvest processes to ensure high-quality and exclusive flavor profiles. We take care of your cacao when it is the most vulnerable: When It’s fresh.
